Did you know that the risk of dying from amputation is 50% higher than most cancers?
My name is Gary Ross, I am the CEO and Founder of WoundWise.
Chronic wounds are very common in people with diabetes and when not caught fast enough could result in an amputation. Studies show that patients with minor amputations have a 5-year mortality rate of about 30%-70% and patients with major amputations have a mortality rate of about 50%-80%. This means that out of everybody who gets an amputation, you can expect half of them or MORE to die within 5 years.
Due to this, I started a company with the dream of building a software application that physicians and nurses could use to help heal chronic wounds more effectively. Teaming up with physician inventors at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, we built and patented the first version of our new wound image analytics solution, WoundWise.
Wound Measurements:
Measuring wounds is a necessary and extremely helpful process in healthcare. The accuracy of the measurement is critical to wound healing, adjusting treatment plans, and the overall healing of the wound. See our reward "Wound Wiser" for detailed information on the calculation of planimetric area - the true surface area of the wound.
What is WoundWise?
WoundWise is a patented technology that accurately measures and assesses the total area of a wound. All you need to do is simply focus your device camera on the wound, and with a few screen taps, you capture the wound measurements and tissue color. Information can be added to a patient’s record, which can then be looked at for trends in area reduction. Change in wound surface area is the key determinant for wound healing and drives treatment plans. This technology can truly change the lives of those with diabetes, chronic wounds, or even wounds in general.
My Experience with WoundWise:
I had the opportunity to go onsite to a Skilled Nursing Facility to go into the rooms of patients and take images of the chronic wounds myself. I learned a lot during this unforgettable experience. One of the many things I learned is when wound healing is improved, nurses feel empowered. Not only does it help the nurses, but having pictures and accurate data also gives the patient optimism and hope. In some cases, this could be the difference between the patient holding on because they still have hope or letting go and giving up. I also learned that simply having our WoundWise technology, can instantly strengthen a wound care team. This is because WoundWise provides accurate information using our patented algorithms, by having more accurate information, you can take better care of the wound, helping it get better quicker and heal correctly.
Why WoundWise?
Keeping it short and sweet, WoundWise will simply improve and saves lives with your donation. The goal of WoundWise is much larger than just healing wounds, we have dreams of healing severe burns and even creating a telehealth service in the future in order to maximize the number of lives we can save.
