Newy Matters is a community wellbeing project conceived by its founder and creator, Peta Dampney. It aims to promote the importance of maintaining positive individual and community wellbeing, both physically and mentally,
by researching and developing low-cost online strategies.
At the core of Newy Matters is the concept that we all have a responsibility to ourselves to be healthy in both mind and body, and understanding we also have an impact on others’ wellbeing in our community.
Newy Matters seeks to capitalise on the greatest resource Newcastle has - its people. Novocastrians can help spread messages of the importance of kindness, understanding, acceptance and encouragement towards others on a daily
basis as well as the essential incorporation of exercise, a good diet and active community involvement into their lives.
Newy Matters hopes to achieve the following in Newcastle, as a result of the pilot phase:
- An interactive social media presence on Twitter and Facebook to promote its campaigns, as well as the development of a website and a Newy Matters App
- A series of online digital videos and programs to educate Novocastrians online about different issues that could have both a positive and/or negative impact on their wellbeing
- The development and implementation of a school-based education program and associated materials
- The establishment of the campaigns Random Acts of Kindness Across Newcastle (RAOKAN) and
Nice, Newcastle to actively engage Novocastrians in promoting the established values of Newy Matters.
It is hoped that at the conclusion of the project that a major sponsor will be attracted to financially support an ongoing version of
Newy Matters.
