Yaya Girls Mission
To create a new class of Ethiopian female role models that will promote gender equality throughout Ethiopia. The ultimate goal is to help adolescent girls facing serious life challenges to become self-sufficient, empowered women who can bring positive changes
to both themselves and the communities in which they surround themselves. A new generation of young Yaya female leaders, enabled and encouraged to fight for gender equality, will help redefine the deep-seated societal norms that unfairly burden girls and
women throughout Ethiopia.
My name is Hannah and I’ll be re-joining the Yaya Girls this year. Hopefully come September I’ll be able to run alongside them. However, for now, due to a foot injury, I’ll be riding my bike to raise money for these extraordinary women.
For each mile I ride, I am asking for an amount of money per mile.
*** 5 cents per mile - $20
*** 10 cents per mile - $40
*** 18 cents per mile - $72
*** 25 cents per mile - $100
*** 50 cents per mile - $200
*** 1 dollar per mile - $400
*** 2 dollars per mile - $800
*** 2.50 per mile - $1,000
5 Pillar Approach
The Yaya Girls Running Program is built upon 5 pillars that offer the girls a diverse set of important life skills. It is our hope that together these 5 pillars will help to build the foundation that is key to strong women, strong individuals,
strong communities, and a stronger Ethiopia. The Pillars are:
*** Athletics
*** Empowement and Life-Skills Building
*** English Training
*** Vocation Skills Training
*** Health and Nutrition Education
Why Women?
As women become more empowered, both socially and economically, they often have a greater say in household and community matters.
In Ethiopia, significant gender gaps have been observed in literacy rates, educational attainment, work status, type of earning for work, occupation, access to media, age at first marriage, and preference for the number of children desired.
Why Running?
Running in Ethiopia is more than just a way to stay in shape; it a source of national pride and inspiration and, by way of numerous running clubs across the country, is already supported by an effective and organized infrastructure.
Healthy competition, provides a place for runners to challenge themselves, feel empowered, and face difficult obstacles.
A running team creates a safe space, in which runners can build confidence, practice teamwork, assert their independence, and find friendship and mentors
The physical act of running focuses on ones’ abilities, rather than disabilities, thus allowing runners to form a sense of pride and ownership over their bodies as they become stronger and pass through barriers that once seemed impenetrable.
