Organización Juventud Ecuatoriana (JUVE) created the Ecuadorian Scholars Fund in the belief that all people deserve the opportunity to develop their potential, regardless of their social status. It is our goal to provide the means to achieve their success;
and proudly, 2013 is the fifth year providing scholarships.
By the end of this year, twenty five (25) students and a total of $25,000 will be contributed to our community, and we will continue to work hard to provide more scholarship in the upcoming years thanks to the support from public and private sources as well
as members from our community.
JUVE strongly believes that education is the road to success, and has established this annual scholarship fund geared to support and encourage the leaders of tomorrow.
The National Center for Education Statistics found that young hispanic college students are less likely than their white counterparts to enroll in a four-year college (56% versus 72%), they are less likely to attend a selective college, less likely to be
enrolled in college full time, and less likely to complete a bachelor’s degree.
Not only are hispanic students in disadvantage with their counterparts, but among hispanic students the lacks of funds is a major cause for disenrollment. According to a survey done by Associated Press-Univision, at least 54% of Hispanics indicated the lack
of funds as a great obstacle to obtain their College degrees. The Ecuadorian population is the fourth highest Hispanic population in New York City and among the Ecuadorian community, only 8.5% have achieved a Bachelor’s or a higher degree; that is 4.5% lesser
than the national percentage of Hispanics.
2013 will mark the fifth consecutive year awarding the ESF scholarships , which grants five $1,000 scholarships to
college-level Ecuadorian students or of Ecuadorian descent, to cover their school-related expenses. In a survey in 2009, 88% of Latinos ages 16 and older agreed that a college degree is necessary to get ahead in life today (Pew Hispanic Center, 2009). From
the experience of having worked closely with the community for the past 7 years we have witnessed the tremendous potential amongst our community and the ESF is proof that whenever the resources are available, the community WILL make use of them to better themselves
and the community as a whole.
JUVE’s goal is to make of The Ecuadorian Scholars Fund a permanent fund, and to expand scholarship opportunities to a more diversified pool of participants from the immigrant community of the Tri-state area.
We want to make a call to the generous support of the private and public sectors, and the community at large to help us accomplish this year's goal: $5,000. These funds will cover this year’s scholarships.
