Our Passion
Kyalo plants maize and beans in his shamba (farm). He practices the same farming methods as his parents did. Over the past 10 years it has gotten harder for her to harvest enough food because the rains are not reliable like they used to be. This is due to
the changing climate. Currently he produces enough to feed his family for one month of the year. Some seasons the crops wither and dry up before even producing.
This story is repeated all over Makueni County where some farmers are considering giving up on farming all together because they feel the money used to buy seeds could be better spent buying food.
Geovalue Organics is working to equip and support farmers to adapting to the changing climate in many ways:
* Teaching conservation agriculture, agroforestry and integrated pest management
* Creating a supportive community of farmers implementing climate-smart agricultural practices
* Getting activities certified as a carbon credit project to create another stream of income for farmers
We envision a vibrant Makueni County agricultural sector where people are able to adapt to the changing climate and thrive by restoring degraded farm land.
Our Plan
Our plan is to get the farming activities certified as an agricultural carbon credit project under the Gold Standard. This will allow farmers to get paid on the carbon they capture in their farms. The extra income can go a long way towards motivating people
to adopt new methods and helping pay for household expenses.
The funds raised through this campaign will go towards the expenses involved in getting a carbon credit project certified and beginning the implementation. The process of certification includes:
* A baseline survey
* Quantifying the amount of carbon that is possible to capture
* Writing project documents
* Validation and verification of the project by a third party organization.
We have completed the baseline survey are currently in the process of compiling our data to quantify the carbon potential.
We will begin our training seminars in March so farmers can start practicing the new methods in preparation for the next rainy season.
Summary
Climate change is already affecting people in Makueni County, making it even more difficult for them to make a living from the land in a semi-arid environment. By implementing climate-smart agricultural practices farmers become more resilient and can better
adapt to changing weather patterns. You can help us get these activities certified as a carbon credit project and create another stream of income for struggling farmers in Kenya.
Suggested Donation Levels
* $30 trains 1 farmer on all aspects of climate-smart agriculture, allowing them to participate in the carbon credit project.
* $100 purchases a jab planter used in no-till planting.
* $250 is the cost to plant 200 trees in a farm.
* $2500 pays the salary of 10 climate-smart agriculture trainers.
