About This Project

We have a problem....

Plastic will outlive all of us and great, unused things already exist in the homes of our friends, neighbours and family.

The world is warming and that's a bad thing for people, plants, and animals.

Recycling things is good, but it's expensive and not all stuff that can be recycled gets there.

Activities for a whole family can be $$$$ and may not feel inclusive.

BUT we have a solution!

unwaste your school habitat connects school kids with each other and their families, while communities connect with sustainable businesses and local growers and makers around them.

We help kids to see the potential in second hand, home-made, swapped, hacked, modified, and re-purposed things.

Unwaste hosts a free event on weekends in schools and kids can bring their favourite adult.

Families form teams to collect litter to bring back to our crack team of trained unwaste volunteers which they sort and weigh and exchange for unwaste tokens.

Kids can take those tokens to the pop up shop of donated pre-loved things to trade for treasures. Treasures with unlimited potential to change and hack or simply use! Treasures that kids have earned by their own hard work and cost their families nothing.

Who is Unwaste?

Unwaste your school habitat is the answer to a question from a ten-year old child of a refugee, “What can my friends and I do for our school?” Unwaste’s vision is to provide an inclusive environmental project in all schools. Our goal is to show kids their capacity to teach their families how to decrease their own contributions to climate change. And that every child is valued.

We listen.

We ask each school what their needs are and mentor pupils to create the posters for their own school. Unwaste events are tailored to each school and reflect the unique culture and joys on the campus.

Kids really are the change agents in families (some might call it pester power!). Kids have more ability to learn new things and more energy and more volume than adults. Each one of our big and little unwasters becomes a powerful environmental relationship builder every where they go.

Use Of Funds

$6,855 Tipping Point Goal

We will host a unwaste your school habitat event in a school in Parramatta Local Government Area that's free for kids and their big people.

We'll ask a student artist in the school to design a poster and we'll train some grown ups in how to unwaste rubbish Parramatta style!

Kids go pick up litter, we teach them which bin it goes in (yes, there is always a right answer!) and then they get to go to our pop up shop with their unwaste tokens and go wild buying good second hand stuff.

If the adults want to host a barbecue we'll totally let them. YUM.

But we'll also get kids to sing or dance or slam a fierce poem in our busker's area.

Cleaning up their world, finally getting the answers to which bin is which, listening to music, eating good food, and GETTING GREAT STUFF THAT DOESN'T COST THE PLANET OR THE PARENTS ANYTHING... that's what you can make happen in our lovely Parra.

If we don't make it to $4700, never fear, we can stage a free schoolday unwaste lunchtime incursion for $2100.
