THE STORY OF THIS PROJECT
One of the biggest obstacles to ending global poverty is a lack of connection. Even though we have more information than ever on the causes and mass scale of poverty, global inequality continues
to get worse. The reason? The very people who are most important to ending poverty – you, me, communities around the world – feel disconnected and isolated from the issue.
But what if we could change the story from one of disconnection, to one of connection?
THE POWER OF EMPATHY
This is where The Shared Initiative comes in. We are using empathy as a tool for large-scale social change. Using empathy, we can change our story.
Empathy is the simple imaginative act of “stepping into someone else’s shoes”. Looking at the world through someone else’s eyes, and experiencing the reality of another person at a deep and
personal level. People are starting to recognise the power of empathy to change lives. It’s being used in schools to tackle bullying.
But more can be done. Beyond individual transformation, empathy can be a force for large-scale social change. Empathy is so powerful that it can transform a faceless stranger, a statistic,
into a unique individual with whom you now have a bond. Imagine the impact empathy could have on global poverty!
CHANGE STARTS IN CHILDREN'S HEARTS
We, the pioneers of The Shared Initiative, are pioneering the unleashing of “global empathy”. Our aim is to expand the power and reach of empathy on a global scale to tackle global issues.
Our first step is rolling out our primary school curriculum on global empathy - a world first. The curriculum uses practical and creative activities - role play, painting and storytelling -
to enable children to explore the experiences of people around the world. It creates an environment where children feel comfortable stepping out of themselves and into the lives of others.
Your support in this campaign will enable us to pilot our teaching module in at least 30 primary school classes across 6 countries – Australia, Fiji, Bangladesh, East Timor, rural Kenya, and
England, to over 1000 children and their families.
$3,500 Tipping Point Goal

TIPPING POINT: When we hit $3500 we will be able to pilot our month-long Empathy Teaching Module in 30 classes across Sydney, London, Fiji, East Timor, Bangladesh and rural Kenya. It costs on
average AUD$100 per class (of 40 students) to produce the teaching materials, purchase local art supplies for the students, train local facilitators, and document the lessons. The remainder of the money will go to producing our rewards.
TOTAL FUNDING GOAL: If we hit our big $6000 goal, we will be able to offer our sessions to 480 more students in 12 more schools across our 6 countries. We will also be able to offer follow up
sessions at each school, where students will have the chance to virtually meet other classes who have taken the program in our other countries. The remaining $1300 will allow us to purchase and provide 3 second hand laptops and internet access to our facilitators
in East Timor, Fiji and Bangladesh to run these real-world online hangouts.

MEET THE CAMPAIGN TEAM:
Kylie Marks (Sydney, Australia): Kylie is a human rights activist and advocacy advisor, with grassroots and international experience. She founded The Shared Initiative to communicate the power
of sharing and empathy to address large-scale global social issues, such as poverty and inequality.
Susanna Rossi (Sydney, Australia): As a photographer, Susanna aims to tell people's stories and connect fellow humans across the world. She believes that creativity has a big role to play in
tackling the world's hardest problems.
Katie Robertson (London, England): Working in non-formal education programs for over 10 years has taught Katie the importance of engaging children and young people in global issues. Katie has
been working to develop Shared's global empathy curriculum.
Danielle Marks (Sydney, Australia): With a background in journalism and speech pathology, Danielle is all about communication. She aims to get people across the world to start talking and understanding
each other through Shared.
Caroline Sevilla (Quezon City, Philippines): Caroline's background in human rights and psychosocial work deepened her understanding about empathy. She believes that through empathy we can break
barriers and borders between people from different nations, cultivating sharing, equality, and international solidarity. Let's unleash empathy and make it happen!
