ThynkWare Speech - A communication solution for ALS and Locked-in Syndrome patients.
ThynkWare (www.thynkware.com) is seeking to help amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients initiate text and email messages using their thoughts. The project is intended to
assist a very wide range of patients, including those who are partly or nearly completely “locked in” socially due to communication difficulties.
This project will allow patients to use a newly invented iPhone app to send a message. The patient will use thought commands to initiate the app, and then to select a message from a customizable menu of messages. The chosen message will be read aloud by
the phone, and can also be sent as text or email to a designated recipient. Beyond the grant period, the capability can be extended to a wider range of messages and to fully controlling an iPhone or Android phone.
ThynkWare Speech is based upon a patent-pending technology invented by ThynkWare's founder, Duane Cash, which is for a mind-controlled virtual assistant on a smartphone device. This technology allows user to control their devices in a variety of ways using
only the power of thought.
ThynkWare provides the interface layer between your brain and your devices. With ThynkWare, anyone can use their thoughts to control their smartphones, tablets, home, office, tv, robots, and even clothing. ThynkWare creates a new way of computing enabling
us to "thynk" to interact with devices, social networks, and other people. We feel that the ThynkWare interface is the next step in computing following the invention of the mouse and personal computer.
In 2013, I created a mind-controlled virtual assistant on a smartphone device. The video of this patent pending technology made a small buzz on the Internet and media. Next, I created Dawn: A new kind of virtual assistant. Using a custom API for Siri, Dawn
focused more on conversation and learning concepts on-the-fly.
Now with ThynkWare Speech, we want to use the same core technology to start some good by helping ALS patients and others with communication difficulties gain the capability of using thought to communicate with family, caregivers and friends. We would to build
upon our successes and make a solution that translates thought into speech. That's important to us and we hope you feel the same way.
