The 888 Co-operative Causeway was formed in 2018 to establish a boutique co-working space in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. But we didn't just want to come together to rent cheap deskspace - we wanted to build a community of mutual support.
2021 has been a difficult year for so many of us but our co-operative has continued to stay committed to members, run successful events … and we have even founded a podcast.
We are now in the fortunate position to be able to offer a few new places in our member-based community to help you take on 2022 – no matter what it throws at us.
For your consideration three key questions to help you make up your mind:
- Do you want to join a community of mutual support?
- Are you looking for a city HQ?
- Do you need a better place to meet?
Here's the deal in a nutshell ...
- Collaborator members - get full-time deskspace access to kick of your first 6-months of 2022 in the heart of the city for just $1330 (equates to about $51 per week) and access to the Kelvin Club for your own events (and access to Good Vibes co-working when visiting Sydney) (remote/regional Collaborator members get this at about half the cost - $685) (plus all the Networker benefits)
- Networker members - get full access to our paywalled special podcasts (usually $7 per month) and free entry to all our special events (usually about $15-25 per event) and you get to democratically contribute to our co-op as a full member of our community.
If you would like to sponsor a spot for social enterprise you can do that too (and get serious Patron kudos in the process).
Note that deskpace at the Causeway (and to Good Vibes when visiting Sydney) is subject to hotdesk availability (although access is rarely a problem).
Our community of mutual support
When you sign up for your deskspace you are not just a customer. Co-operatives exist to serve members socially (build a better world), culturally (mutually beneficial relationships) and economically (get a great deal on a service or product). Our co-op is a not-for-profit social enterprise where every customer is an owner of the business they benefit from. We think this form of business builds a better world and we’d like you to join with us.
Our Collaborator (deskspace) members include:
- Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (peak body for co-operatives and mutuals in Australia)
- Co-operative Bonds (co-operative education and development consultancy)
- Sorted. (innovative business consulting services)
- Community Services and Health Industry Training Board (peak body for vocational education and training in the community services area)
- Dr Sarah Howe (Freelance Researcher and Grant Writer focussing on regional and place-based development, industrial policy, and political economy).
City HQ
Located in the 1920s, palazzo-style Causeway House we provide a quiet deskspace with wi-fi right in the heart of the Melbourne CBD for Collaborator members. Perfect for socially focussed freelancers and small enterprises.
A better place to meet
Our Collaborator (deskspace) members also enjoy the benefit of co-operative corporate group membership at the Kelvin Club in Melbourne Place. Meet with colleagues, host an event or just unwind at this quirky and treasured Victorian institution.
Basil’s Table
Connect with social economy leaders
The Co-operative Causeway hosts a regular interview series at the Kelvin Club featuring emerging as well as seasoned social economy leaders conducted by co-op Patron Basil Varghese, a Melbourne-based community builder and social justice advocate. Previous speakers include Melina Morrison, CEO of the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals, Dan Musil, Secretary of Earthworker Co-operative and Rowan Dowland, former Chief Strategy Officer of Bank Australia.
The Co-operative Way podcast
Learn more about the social and solidarity economy
Our podcast series interviews social economy leaders and practitioners based in Australia and across the globe - inspiring people like Marissa who sucessfully led a community buyout of an old church for community use (saving it from the clutches of developers) using co-operative social investment methods.
Shared ownership - shared benefit
All members have a vote at general meetings, the opportunity to stand for board election and a say on the strategy and development of our co-operative.
