The Brigantes Project strives to provide a cleaner alternative to traditional shipping methods, which have been shown to be harmful to marine ecosystems and the global climate. Through the restoration of a historic shipping vessel, the BRIGANTES will be reborn as a majestic, sail-powered cargo transporter that will not only provide environmentally friendly (carbon neutral) transport of ethically sourced goods, but also an opportunity for co-owners and volunteers to come onboard and immerse themselves in a genuine, unfiltered sailing experience on the high seas.
Our project is designed to support a growing, healthy transport culture by shipping products globally under sail, while ensuring that every stage of the supply chain promotes the protection and preservation of the environment for future generations—from grower to buyer.
What You Can Do to Help
We understand that without the support of like-minded individuals like you, this project would not be possible. Essentially, you are the wind in our sails. That is why the Brigantes Project is providing opportunities for our supporters to fully participate, from donating and volunteering in the restoration process, to becoming co-owners of the ship, and joining us in the adventure of sail-powered shipping. Our strength and success comes from our team, of which we want for you to be a part.
Our Ship
Sister ship to the famous Eye of the Wind (which has been feature in films including Blue Lagoon and White Squall), the SV-BRIGANTES (then called Meta) was born in 1911, in the renowned German shipyard Lühring. Through the years, she saw many changes, including the addition of engine power, and eventually found her way to the port of Trapani, in Sicily, where she was found, waiting to be called back to sea. And it is here where the restoration has begun to bring this historic ship back to her former sail-powered glory.
Our Success So Far
Our growing team, which includes a professional boat builder, an experienced businessman and entrepreneur, a German naval engineer, a seasoned mariner, an environmental architect, and a marine biologist and ecologist, among many others, has already worked for over one year in many facets. Restoration of the steel hull is currently underway in Sicily, while the preparation for interior construction based on the original specifications is being done in the Italian Alps.
