About Us
We are the victims of war, politics, and discrimination who fled their homeland for a safer place. We are a group of people from various Asian countries like Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan and gathered here in Indonesia hoping to end up somewhere where we would live a normal life like everyone else. We want to live in a place that provides and respects our basic human rights; to be able to send our children to local school and not worry about losing our lives. But unfortunately fleeing all these nightmares didn't make a lot of a difference for us except one thing that we are safe which is what we are truly grateful for. We are also grateful to the Indonesian government for letting us stay here as refugees. It is sad that we are not allowed to work here or enroll our children to formal schools. Having all this difficulty, some people are stuck here since 2012 due to a slow process in UNHCR. It was in 2015 that we came up with an idea of establishing a school here so our children can get the education at first place.
Refugee Learning Nest (the Nest) was established in March 2015 by refugees for refugees which doesn't concern any ethnicity, religion or culture. We established the Refugee Learning Nest which has been very successful so far because we got enormous support from many generous people from around the world that made a change and allows it to operate in times of uncertainty.
A lot of work has been done since, a huge number of refugee children have been receiving education and many refugees call Refugee Learning Nest their school and home, which is a community-based and volunteer-based school. It belongs to every refugee regardless of their nationality, religion, and language. None of these would have been possible without our humanitarian supporter's contributions.
Our achievements
There are 116 students who are being taught daily in morning and afternoon shifts. We have 20 talented teachers with different skills who are volunteers and teach different subjects. We have 6 other volunteers who run the HR, Finance, Communication, Principal, Purchase officer and project officer to manage the school.
We have online courses for our teachers and students with a native speaker of English. We have several Bahasa and English classes in the afternoon shift for adults and children which help them to become able to communicate both locally and internally. On the other hand, we consider education and sport we have a qualified coach volunteers from refugees that teaches kickboxing and futsal for having better health. Already there have been many improvements to the school including the purchase of laptops and the construction of more classrooms and a large multi-purpose hall for exams and special events.
Having the ability to provide a safe place for our students play various sports such as futsal and volleyball have brought us great joy and pride in our work, however, none of this would have been achievable without any of this generous support from our supporters and staff.
We kindly request you to consider helping us and make a change by donating as much as you can. It really means a lot to everyone here at the RLN and especially the innocent children that are waiting for your help. These people will be at least having this school running and provide the education while it’s taken from them.
[Maybe it meant to 'be refugee' but it is not meant to 'not get support from lucky people like you!']
