The goal of Aloha Alliances is to create community initiatives that build relationships and inspire trust. Every 6-8 months we take on new initiatives and then pass them off, once they are sustainable, with community and/or financially, to our nonprofit partners, organizations, or interested individuals.

This campaign is for initiative 001: Redefining Our Relationship To Waste.
We are basing our work on the image Buyerarchy of Needs created by artist/designer Sarah Lazarovic.
Our first experiment will be local to Maui, where will be upcycling a trailer to have a pop-up style Tool Lending Library, Toddler Toy Swap, Recycle Depot, and a Repair Cafe. .
Our goal is to take these experiments to community events around Maui for people to experience waste in a different way then what is already offered locally. Currently, the island has downgraded its recycling program to solely #1 & #2 plastic and has seen an increase in imports. We hope to create a community around other options for waste than solely recycling and landfill accumulation.
Any additional funds will allow us to curate similar experiences for our online community as well as spend additional time with our partner organizations walking alongside them as they prepare to take over the maintenance and next life of our experiments.

While this particular page is a generation of funds we are a 'gift-based' organization and find ourselves giving and receiving many things beyond money. Below are a list of things that will support this initiative and allow us to spend more time in relationships and responding to our emerging communities:
-A used trailer & hitch
-Tools, like a chain saw and table saw, for the Tool Library
-Gently used Toys for toddlers
-Tools for the Repair Cafe, like screwdrivers and glue.
-Small and large waterproof storage bins
-Wood for signage and to build a bar and stools on the trailer
-Signage
-A place to store the recyclables before we ship in bulk back to the originating companies.
-Connections to people and projects that are already doing or have done these sorts of things in the past in Maui and beyond.
If you are able to give any of these material items please reach out to [email protected]
$3,500 Tipping Point Goal
We will use the funds to find, build, or buy the following:
-A mobile trailer for the pop-up Tool Lending Library, Toddler Toy Swap, & Repair Cafe
-Rent for a location to store the recyclables and maker space to build and maintain our trailer.
-Materials, like signage, flyers, and tools
-Half of our online & technology organizational fees (this is split between our anticipated bi-annual crowdfunding campaigns).
Our commitment and economic equation:
-We are deeply guided by 'gift' and 'circular' economies meaning we accept many different forms of currency and are committed to products having many different purposes over their lifetime.
-While we have created a budget we also are open to other types of contributions which we've listed in the budget. For example if you have a used trailer, used tools, or a skill you'd like to give to this project we'll gladly accept it.
-If we need to buy anything we will first look to purchase it from a used space, like a thrift store. We will only buy new as a last resort and we definitely will make every attempt to purchase locally as well.
-If other contributions offset our original budget we will use any additional money to create small experiments around the topic of Redefining Waster in our online community space.
$6,500 Stretch Goal
This stretch goal allows us to support the work of our Alliances and community leaders. This includes things like
-Listening for and walking alongside individuals interested in taking over any of the initiatives
-Creating trainings for nonprofit or organizational staff
-Documenting lessons learned and creating visioning workshops with Allies as they explore how to maintain and give a second life to these initiatives.
-Spending 1-1 time with individuals who emerge as leaders in our community, visioning and holding space for their own experiments and initiatives, on a personal and transformational level.
If, at the end of this initiative we have extra money, because of material contributions or the extreme generosity of our supporters, we will include a donation to our Allies who take over the experiments once we find them to be sustainable, either with a functioning community or financially stable. This money will be given to them in good faith of maintaining, owning and resourcing the next life of the initiative.
