Who We Are
We are a citizen's group focused on advocacy for open space and environmental protection in the Springfield Panhandle. We have been creating alternatives to a re-zoning
proposal by the owner of a large property called the Tecce tract, at 9303 Ridge Pike in the heart of the area. While this specific proposal has been denied, we believe this was just one chapter in a continuing story. We have existed for over ten years because
we want to protect the unique enclave that is the Panhandle. We believe this can be done in a way to balances the legitimate rights of the property owner with the interests of the community.

“On Holme’s map of original surveys this township is marked “Guliema Maria Penn’s Manner of Springfield,” and according to the Penn manuscripts contained four thousand and ten acres………… It is a tradition that Maria Penn requested that when it was laid
out a strip should be attached to it leading to the Schuylkill, so that forever afterwards she or her successors should have the privilege, whenever they desired, to reach the river by their own land.”
From History of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (1884) by Theodore Weber Bean

Our Mission
The Panhandle remains unique. It contains some of the last large open spaces on the border of Philadelphia, and plays a key role protecting the environmental and aesthetic character of a large area bordering
Fairmount Park. That's why we feel it's critical to defend the area against development proposals that would maximize profit but destroy the unique character that has endured throughout history. This recent article from the Philadelphia Inquirer tells the
story of our efforts:

Brennan Preine looks at the land, part of an area set aside by William Penn to provide Schuylkill access from a colonial manor.
And this one summarizes our group's success in helping to see that the current re-zoning proposal was defeated:
The Help We Need From You
However, it's likely that the developer will be back with another re-zoning proposal aimed solely at maximizing profits. We need your help to ensure our continued ability to advocate for open space and the environmental health of the area.
Each time a new re-zoning proposal is submitted, we need the help of land planners and lawyers to counter the professionals employed by the developer. It’s how we have established a reputation as a group that supports constructive solutions, and frankly,
it’s the only way to level the playing field against some very powerful influences. This approach takes time and money. Please consider making a modest contribution to help offset the costs we have already accrued, and help us build a reserve for whatever
may come next in this continuing saga.
With your help, the Friends of the Springfield Panhandle will be ready to advocate for the balanced, fair outcome that our community deserves. Thanks very much for your time and support.
