Our Story
We are a group of individuals with hope of contributing towards a better future. Our members come from all different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. We always strive hard towards a common goal, which is the development of youth leadership potentials.
As the local chapter of one of the largest global youth-run not-for-profit organisations, AIESEC Melbourne is committed to work hard to deliver the programs that will most benefit the growth of young leaders that we have the opportunity to work with.
However, we know that we will not be able to do this alone. That's why we need your help to turn one of our future projects into a reality.
The Pressing Need
Australia is considered a developed country but every year around 50,000 young Australians aged 15 to 19 drop out of education and training, and ultimately become unemployed.
Some end up living a low-quality and stressful life. Some adopt unhealthy and dangerous lifestyles, making them a threat to themselves and the community. Not to mention the negative economic impacts this has on the Australian economy as a whole.
According to the Business Council of Australia, the trend of young Australian school droppers increasing in recent years will inevitably result in lower employment rates, increased welfare payments, lower productivity, and lower tax revenue for Australia.
Our Project
This is also the main reason for the existence of NeklevelOz.
NeklevelOz is a project with the main aim of empowering disadvantaged youth to explore opportunities and enact change.
The project will span over the course of six weeks, which will include a wide range of activities and helpful resources for the disadvantaged youth to explore and fully develop their potential.
We are also making plans to bring over four volunteers from overseas to help us make the project happen.
The specific outline of the project is as follows:
Week 1: Self-awareness activities - Discovering Strengths and Weaknesses
- Understanding youth's dreams and aspirations.
Week 2: Introduction to the volunteers - Get to know you activities
- Cultural awareness and cultural sharing.
- Building trust with the EPs.
Week 3: Learn content. Understand reality of Australia and issues.
- 'Australia is a developed country, but...'
Week 4: Challenging mindsets.
- Helping youth to believe in themselves.
- Understand further career options (education).
Week 5: Using tools and resources to create a community related project.
- Students are to feel empowered and take action.
Week 6: Start the community related project.
- Present the project (final event) - open invitation.
Why It Matters
This project, coordinated by AIESEC Melbourne, will provide leadership and development opportunities to students and volunteers through a unique cross-cultural experience. Not only that, the project also promises the empowerment of a new generation of Australian disadvantaged youth.
It facilitates the exchange of knowledge, expertise and working methods of individuals with different cultural backgrounds.
It helps empower Australian disadvantaged youth through developing activities and helpful resources.
We hope to create shared awareness and understanding of key issues and culture in not only Australia, but the volunteer’s native country as well.
