Mango Jam impulsa procesos locales que transforman la abundancia de mangos en productos no perecederos que sirven como sustento de las comunidades locales
Durante los meses de junio y julio la naturaleza se manifiesta para regalarnos su abundancia. Es la cosecha de mango en diferentes áreas de la costa caribe de Colombia. Esta abundancia es de tal magnitud que no alcanza a ser recogida, consumida ni aprovechada y termina en su mayoría pudriéndose en el suelo.
La única opción para los campesinos es esperar un camión que ha veces pasa y compra cajones de 20 kilos de mango a precio de entre 1000 y 2000 pesos colombianos equivalente a (.35 a .70 centavos de dólar). Cuando no pasa el camión, se pierde el esfuerzo ya que el mango se pudre rápidamente.
En 2014 nace Mango Jam gracias a la integración de esfuerzos de diferentes colectivos de Palomino a los cuales, a lo largo de estos años se han sumado diferentes comunidades como: Santa Rita, Minca, Santa Marta, Don Diego y Guachaca; quienes por medio de talleres y jornadas colectivas de producción, elaboran recetas y conservas a base de mango. Esta iniciativa busca ser un vehículo de impacto colectivo ya que promueve la soberanía alimentaria de las comunidades del territorio y trabaja en miras de convertirse en un emprendimiento social que genere ingresos para estas.
La zona en la cual estamos trabajando; Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta es una región que ha sido gravemente afectada por la guerra que ha sufrido Colombia hace varias décadas y hasta el día de hoy. Es una región con un tejido social muy frágil y desarticulado. La agricultura ha prácticamente desaparecido de la región y existen altos índices de pobreza, malnutricion, violencia y falta de oportunidad en educación y trabajo.
Para 2018, el Mango Jam está coordinando la fabricación de grandes cantidades de productos elaborados a partir del mango y la implementación de una estrategia comercial entre productores locales y el sector turístico basada en la economía solidaria y el comercio justo.
Hace una década que la región Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta se ha venido convirtiendo en un destino turístico cada vez más concurrido; pero desafortunadamente este florecimiento económico no ha beneficiado de manera notable a los campesinos o productores locales ya que los hoteles y restaurantes compran en su mayoría productos nacionales e internacionales en Santa Marta o Riohacha (ciudades cercanas).
Esto no se debe a la falta de buenas intenciones por parte de los compradores, sino al hecho de que no existe producción local ni rutas de venta a nivel regional.
Sin embargo es posible cambiar esta realidad y aprovechar el auge turístico para el beneficio de los productores locales de alimentos estableciendo nuevas rutas de compra y venta entre las cocinas del sector turístico a la vez que se capacita personas de las comunidades locales para fabricar alimentos deseables para los turistas.
Mango Jam busca seguir creciendo y promoviendo el desarrollo sostenible de la región por medio de alianzas con las instituciones públicas y privadas que le permitan expandir su impacto en las comunidades actuales y llegar a nuevas zonas con su modelo de economía circular y colaborativa.
Para darle continuidad a este proyecto se ha decidido organizar una reunión el día 15 de Septiembre de 2018 con los diferentes participantes de la producción con el fin de socializar los resultados obtenidos, compartir experiencias y conocimiento y definir lo que sucederá a futuro con esta iniciativa. También, serán invitados actores importantes relacionados con el comercio justo y fundaciones que trabajan por el beneficio de la región para presentar el proyecto y sus participantes con el fin de crear una posible vinculación que contribuya a su fortalecimiento. Por otro lado, se aprovechará la ocasión para realizar una pequeña celebración de los resultados alcanzados este año que fueron producto del esfuerzo y dedicación voluntaria de todas las personas involucradas.

Mango Jam produces local communal projects to transform the abundance of mangos into imperishable products, which are used as revenues for the local communities.
During June and July, mother nature manifests herself and gives us her abundance. It is the time for the mango harvest in the entire Caribbean coast of Colombia. But this abundance is of such magnitude that it is impossible for all of it to be collected, consumed, or enjoyed, and the majority rots on the ground. In the Caribbean there is very little culture for making food conserves, and this is the skill that Mango Jam brings as a technology to help mitigate the effects of climate change and as a possibility for the creation of new local economies.
At present, the only opportunity from the mango harvest for the farmers to reap benefits is by waiting for a truck which sometimes passes and buys the mangos in crates (20 kilos of mango at a price varying between 1000 and 2000 Colombian pesos , equivalent to 0.35 and 0.70 cents of a US dollar). When the truck doesn’t show up, the day’s effort is lost.
In 2014 Mango Jam was born thanks to an integration of initiatives between different collectives in the town of Palomino, and with each new version, the project has grown to integrate other villages; Santa Rita de la Sierra, Minca, Don Diego and Guachaca. The dynamic involves practical workshops and collective production days in order to elaborated conserves made with mango and learn different methods for conserving foods.
The region where we are working: the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta has been gravely affected by the war Colombia has suffered in the past decades and until today. It is a region with a completely disarticulated social structure, poverty, violence, the highest rates of malnutrition and lowest rates of education in Colombia as well and very few job opportunities.
For 2018, Mango Jam has coordinated the manufacture of a large quantity of products elaborated with mangos as well as the implementation of a commercial strategy between local producers and the touristic sector based on solidarity economy and fair trade. This strategy has been very successful and we were able to sell over 600 products to local restaurants and hotels. 80% of the benefit from these sales went directly to the local producers.
During the past decade, the region of the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta has seen the development of a growing touristic industry. Unfortunately this economic growth has not been sufficiently beneficial to the local farmers or producers. The local hotels and restaurants catering to thousands of tourists daily buy their food supplies from national or international distribution companies based in the nearest cities, Santa Marta and Riohacha. This is not due to the lack of good intentions on the part of the potential buyers, but to the inexistence of local production, transport and organized commercial opportunities at the regional level.
Nevertheless, it is possible to change this reality and for more people to benefit from the tourist economy by developing new local supply opportunities to the benefit of the local food producers, and by training local people to produce food products desired by the tourists.
Mango Jam would like to continue to promote the sustainable development of the region through alliances with public and private institutions, this in order to continue our process with the groups that are already working with us and to expand to new communities which are asking for our support.
To help the project to move forward, a reunion and cultural event will be organized September 15th of 2018 when we will invite all the participants from this year’s process. The aim of this meeting is an opportunity to analyze this year’s process and share experiences and knowledge, as well as to define the future development of the initiative. Regional and national figures and foundations linked with fair trade and sustainable development will be invited to join our reunion and initiative. Moreover, this meeting will be an opportunity to celebrate the results achieved this year and thank the efforts of everyone involved as well as a cultural event that will work as a marketing tool to strengthen our brand in the public sector.
