La Matanza – The community
La Matanza is home to 2.5 million people and is situated just 50 kilometres outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is one of the many suburbs surrounding the city.
During the 20th century, millions of people migrated from rural areas around the country to work in the industrialising capital. In 1994, the outskirts of Buenos Aires counted 340 major industries that each employed at least 500 employees.
20 years later, most of these industries had closed and moved to Asia, leaving the region with only 2 industries remaining and over 2 million work places less. The people affected by this economical catastrophe were of course the poorest, living in the huge neighbourhoods of the capital of Argentina.
Growing suburbs - Expanding poverty
The ever growing population of Buenos Aires and this disappearance of work places created huge suburbs that are no longer able to respond to the needs of the people living there.
Today, Buenos Aires has over 40% of it’s population living in poverty. In addition, these suburbs have been abandoned by the government, who seems to have other concerns than improving the lives of so many Argentinians.
Identidad Vecinal
Identidad Vecinal was founded in 2006, with the goal to improve the general living conditions of the people living in La Matanza. Since its creation, the size of the population of this neighbourhood has not stopped increasing and generates even more poverty.
As these people’s living conditions continue to deteriorate, the big family of Identidad Vecinal strives to bring positive change to these neighbourhoods every day.
Today, this organisation, and its staff of 70 people, are urgently asking for your help!
So how can you help?
Donate! You can help build a hospital with basic medical equipment and medicines. Currently, they have a nurse that checks the people from the community and especially the kids once per week. She mainly examines them for signs of mal/over/under-nutrition and the NGO then adapts the number of groceries it provides to those families. But this is not enough, Identidad Vecinal now needs a functioning hospital to be able to attend to the needs of the people who become sick and can not afford to visit a doctor.
The goal is to provide Identidad Vecinal with a proper hospital. If achieved, the nurse will be able to take care of the 500 families of the community, and more specifically the 800 kids who need medical attention.
Below you can find a detailed explanation of how your donation will make this dream come true :-)
