One in seven Australians have been a victim of racism during the past 12 months. To address this issue, All Together Now launched our first racism prevention project in May in partnership with The Body Shop and Shift Communications.
Over 4 weeks, we asked The Body Shop Australia’s customers to Give Racism The Finger by dipping their finger in ink and adding their fingerprint to a canvas in the store. This action symbolised peoples' willingness to speak up when they witness racism.
The response from customers exceeded our expectations. We collected 50,706 fingerprints, indicating one in three are willing to speak up about racism.
We've also been asking our Facebook friends some provocative questions about racism to engage them in genuine debate about what racism is and how to stop it.
Our work is evidence-based and this campaign will be independently evaluated. We are registered as a nonprofit organisation in Australia.
$1,550 Tipping Point Goal
JCDecaux is donating advertising spaces to Give Racism The Finger at some of Melbourne's biggest train stations including Flinders Street.
To make this happen we need to raise $1,550 by 14 July to pay for printing 50 posters. Any additional money raised will be used to promote this campaign during the next phase (we can't reveal the details - it's a surprise - but we think it will have a big impact!).
The posters will feature our Give Racism The Finger logo with a website address promoting our Facebook page facebook.com/alltognow.
The posters will be displayed for one week. We will assess the impact of this promotion as part of the larger campaign evaluation. Donors who give $100 or more will be among the first to receive the full evaluation report.
Note: The Start Some Good system currently requires donations to be deposited in the U.S. for a brief holding period. For this reason funds will first be accepted by Alex Budak as a US-based representative of All Together Now before being transferred to Australia.
