What are we doing?
We are finishing the construction of a badly needed water purification center in Chirino, Dominican Republic.
Construction began on the project in 2018 and is already about 70% complete. But some of the promised funding never materialized and the project has been stalled. Charity Anywhere's priority is to complete the construction of the facility so we can finish the project.
One the facility is completed, a Michigan based Rotary Club has agreed to fund the water purification equipment. In addition, our Church will fund the drilling of the well.
Why are we doing it?
This project was originally developed by the Awakening Smiles Foundation. Awakening Smiles has devoted most of their efforts in Chirino, where their three part objective is to contribute to the community’s good health, the creation of jobs and self-sustainability. They especially try to focus on adolescent mothers, single mothers and mothers who are victims of abuse in a rural setting by empowering them to self-sufficiency.
Projects they have completed in Chirino include: a nursery school which is managed by single mothers so that adolescent mothers could pursue an education or a job, and collaboration with a Catholic Church based foundation in the construction of small houses for Chirino’s single-parent households.
Once the purification plant is completed, Awakening Smiles will coordinate the operations. A number of local single mothers will be as technicians to process the water and manage the facility. The clean water will be sold to the community at a much lower price. The income from the water sale will pay the workers and provide for maintenance costs. The project is designed to be sustainable.
Our Team
Charity Anywhere Foundation’s Mission is to give “ordinary people” the life changing opportunity to provide needed medical care, dental services and basic shelter to less developed countries while concurrently forever changing the mind and heart of the volunteer for good.
Christy Benedict RN and her husband James Benedict MD will be the project leads for Charity Anywhere. From 2001-2015 Christy and Jim organized teams with the Hope Alliance and Charity Anywhere on a yearly basis to travel to various countries to provide medical services. After their retirement, they served as humanitarian missionaries for their church in the Dominican Republic from May 2016 to October 2017. The couple continues to lead regular humanitarian service trips in the Dominican Republic with Charity Anywhere.
