Why are we having this campaign:
For the children of pastoral herders in Delüün aimag (county) in western Mongolia, education is prized as a path for their children to improve their quality of life. As the herders are scattered across the grasslands, children are boarded at school centers across the aimag. The high school is in the only town in the aimag, but primary schools are more closely located to the herders. A former slaughterhouse has been converted into a school for these children. The current school was recently granted some money by the Mongolian government to improve their classrooms (new desks, chalk boards, heating, school supplies, etc.), but no money was allocated to improve the dormitories.
For Whom:
The primary school at the head of Ganz Modh valley in Chigertei National Park is attended by approximately 65 primary students from the surrounding valleys. All younger children at the school are required to sleep 2 to a bed because of a shortage of beds.
What we are doing:
The Altai Institute in 2018 raised $1000 to build 10 new beds for the school. We are seeking another $2500.00 to build 20 more new beds and obtain some additional furniture for the dorms. If we raise the amount by December, we have beds built by the time the students return to school. If later we want to have beds for the students when they return in September 2021.
Our Team:
Dr. Barry Rosenbaum, Executive Director of the Altai Institute, has been working in this community for over 15 years. Through his research and extended stays (3-4 months per year), he has establish close ties through out the community.. In addition, Barry, as a former professor and high school teacher, feels an special affinity to the local children and supporting their ability to learn in a supportive environment.
Karla Lipp came on board to the Altai Institute three years ago to support Barry as a business director. She fell in love with Snow Leopards and Mongolia at the young age of 18 and finally was able to travel to Deluun to see this beautiful place and support the community through fund raising and volunteer support.
