Art to Heal is an innovative program tailoring an educational experience to a specific audience, cancer survivors during various aspects of their cancer journey and the people who care for them. Taught at Heartwood College of Art by working studio artists in a variety of disciplines, the goal of the workshops is to build trust among a group of strangers who share a common challenge.

Why It Matters

Art To Heal embraces the universal art process of creating order out of disorder, and echoing the experience many cancer patients go through in their treatment. These workshops are not strictly for entertainment, but about expression, reflection and wellness.
Every class is built on the premise that through the sequencing process, one can gather pieces together into something whole. There is a method of ordering and connection that provides an emotional map as well as a quiet interlude away from treatment fatigue. The commonality in cancer speaks to everyone and we have created this moment together as a way to think about it.
This unique program is initiated from Heartwood's commitment to the concept that "Art is a Conversation", a form of self expression that blooms much more surely and joyfully with the support of others. Heartwood College of Art, is licensed by the State of Maine, to grant graduate and undergraduate degrees and successfully completed a pilot study that was funded by Southern Maine Healthcare. The overwhelming conclusion is the Art To Heal project is essential, accessible and effective in promoting healing on a fundamental level.
We are working with two leading hospitals in our Southern Maine community to reach as many people as possible. Workshops will be offered monthly throughout the year both on location at medical facilities in Southern Maine as well as in the artist studios at Heartwood College of Art at the North Dam Mill in Biddeford, Maine.
