THE REALITY
Every nine seconds in the United States a woman is beaten. Those who find themselves in a volatile relationship may experience physical, verbally threatening, and/or emotionally damaging abuse. And then there are those people who are victims
of sexual assault. One out of four girls and one out of seven boys are sexually assaulted. These statistics, as a nation, are alarming. To be a victim of one of these violent acts can be extremely traumatizing and overwhelming. Yet, the reality
is that this is an everyday occurrence and these people do not know where to look for support.
OUR STORY
We are a group of Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) Criminal Justice students looking to make a difference in our community. We constantly hear of these types of cases in our textbooks and in the media. We wondered what happens to the victims afterwards.
The answer is usually unbeknownst. That is why we searched for an organization in our community that helps this cause.
We have created this fundraiser in hopes to raise money for the
Abuse Counseling and Treatment Inc. (ACT) in Southwest Florida. This non-profit center has been open for almost thirty years. It has come to our knowledge that the facility is at full capacity (of 90 beds) all year round. ACT, in the past
year, has serviced over 5,000 individuals, answered an estimate of 10,000 distress calls, and housed 50 victims of human trafficking. Clearly, ACT plays an important part in the community since
the organization provides a rape crisis center, a 24/7 crisis hotline, and a children’s program. This organization also assists in encouraging individuals of all ages and gender to seek support, knowledge, and protection.
