How Disability Project Empower Works
Disability Project Empower (DPE) is a program that assists young disabled entrepreneurs in the creation and execution of their own their own advocacy projects.
Through DPE 2Gether-International.org has two goals:
1) Forster entrepreneurial skills that will help project leaders break down barriers to employment and succeed in the workforce.
2) Connect young disabled leader to a global network of mentors and likeminded advocates.
Specifics
- Advocacy Projects must be lead by a youth (age 30 or younger) who identifies as disabled.
- All projects require a team of three or more people. Team members do not have to identify as disabled.
(This will help to form bridges between disabled and non-disabled people, normalize disability in the workforce, and inspire employers to hire people with disabilities.)
Some skills that our project participants will develop are:
Team manangement and leadership
Finance Management
budget projects
Networking
developing business plans
Crowdfunding
And more!
EXAMPLES
"AbleDate" by Andres Urbina, is tackling stigmas around the subject of dating amongst intellectually disabled people. He first approached us with a 2 paragraph project proposal and now, with Disability Project Empower's support and encouragement, Andres has a fully fleshed business proposal with an incredible pitch deck. Andres' confidence skyrocketed while working with us, which is evident in his improved presentation skills, and we’re excited to support him as a leader and disability advocate in his local community.
"Disabled Humans of the World" by Adina Karten (who identifies with chronic pain), shares the stories and experiences of disabled people from her community through social media. Her project not only raises disability visibility and awareness, but also builds a community of disabled people for the world to connect and learn from. Adina launched her project on Facebook, which has started to gain mass traction as a result of her involvement with Disability Project Empower and 2Gether-International.org.
