The Future We Are Creating
People with disabilities need a place where they can go that offers the full spectrum of resources necessary to make their lives better; everything in one place, and that place just for them, their families and
caregivers.
The Greybeard Community Center is a nonprofit facility where members can attend exercise programs of all kinds, those directly related to therapy and recovery, as well as general activity programs.
They can take classes, both related to navigating through disability issues and general courses. In addition to the classroom, there is an activity floor, a therapy pool, an exercise room, therapy room, media center, a snack bar, and more.
We have a personal interest. Our son was severely injured in Afghanistan, suffering numerous physical injuries and severe traumatic brain injury. We've struggled through years of recovery, and will for many more.
We see the need for a facility like this. We want our son to have a place to go. And we want him to get better.
So we are creating the Greybeard Community Center.
We are incorporated in the State of Washington as a non-profit corporation, and are registered with the secretary’s office under the Charitable Solicitation Act.
We have filed with the IRS Charities and Non-Profits office for Federal non-profit tax exempt status.
How We Are Creating It
We’ve developed a business plan, designed the facility, itemized the equipment, materials and supplies lists.
We've detailed the staffing requirements, and will be working with the local community to hire persons with disabilities.
We’ve spent the last several years expanding our network. A number of professionals in the field of disability support (military, veteran and civilian) have stated their intent in assisting us and even volunteer their time and expertise once the doors are open.
The first $40,000 (tipping point) will allow us to purchase the minimum amount of equipment and materials for the center, while the funds we presently have available or that have otherwise been declared will get
us into a building, make it ready, and will get us going. Startup costs to fully open the facility with all departments operating are about $90,000 (hence the $80,000 ultimate goal), with ongoing costs through the first year of approximately $23,000 per month.
We’ve been working at bringing together the funding through book sales and foundation support through the publishing house, but we are still a ways out.
While many of the center’s clients will be provided services at low- or no-cost, we do calculate non-profit income from memberships, classroom programs, activity floor programs, concession sales, day pass admissions, and miscellaneous purchases. This income
stream will offset operating expenses, more so each month until the facility is self-supporting.
The funds from this campaign are intended to help open the doors, while those from other funding sources, along with the income stream, will keep the doors open through the first year until we are truly self-supporting.
Greybeard Publishing was established to support center. 100% of the proceeds from book sales go to the fund to create and maintain the center.
We have recently created the Greybeard Community Center website. The site will serve to support the center and will offer a number of free
online programs.
There is a foundation page through which supporters can contribute.
Our Story & Why You Should Support Us
A non-profit community center for people with disabilities and their families...
Our son was severely injured Afghanistan, suffering numerous physical injuries and severe traumatic brain injury (causing significant cognitive impairment). We've struggled through years of recovery, and will for many more.

What we have discovered these last few years is that people with disabilities need a place where they can go that offers the full spectrum of resources to make their lives better; everything in one place, and that
place just for them, their families and caregivers.
We see a real need for this, and unfortunately that need is only going to grow. While there are facilities and offices with sincere staff that may offer one service or another, there is no single facility that provides the full spectrum of services, and finding
any one service can be difficult.
Our multi-purpose community center is unique in that it serves those living with a disability and, as importantly, it also serves their families and caregivers.
We desperately need a place like this. We know this. We have felt it. Hundreds in our immediate community need this place. Our son needs this place. We want this kid to have a place to go. And we want him to get better.
