Why we are doing what we are doing:
Malawi is facing two major challenges; nutrition and the growing plastic waste problem. Founded in 2019, Green Spark is tackling these two challenges head on through two unique projects.
Moringa Project:
Moringa, or Moringa Oleifera, are Himalayan tree crops that can thrive in a wide variety of soils and weather conditions, making them very easy to cultivate. Nearly every part of the Moringa can be eaten, and its leaves, seeds, and pods also have myriad medicinal applications, making the Moringa an extremely valuable commodity in developing areas. By helping Malawians plant and grow Moringa, we hope to reintroduce agricultural autonomy to these rural communities.
By helping educate communities on the nutritional and medicinal value of the Moringa trees, as well as providing training and extension to help communities steward the trees, Green Spark is working to get Moringa trees into the ecosystem and into the food system.
Plastic Bottles for School Supplies:
On the plastic front, our solution is simple and ground level. Most children lack even basic school supplies, but discarded plastic bottles and bags are an abundant resource that is literally lying around. At our weekly SWAP SHOP, local children can meet up, hang out, make on site, or bring in pre-made plastic bottle bricks (empty plastic bottles filled to the brim with soft plastics) and exchange them directly for school supplies. One full bottle = one pen or notebook. It looks like the children are the ones who are going to clean up the town.
