The Changemaking Photography Campaign
We are raising funds to run a 10-week changemaking photography program for young people from diverse backgrounds (particularly those from Indigenous and recently migrated communities). The program is designed to create breakthrough
learning experiences and develop 21st century skills that the participants can use throughout their lives.
Why are doing this?
Many young people from diverse backgrounds are not studying or working, they are not formally learning or earning. Our programs engage these young people, and those at risk of being in this group, and
empower them through photography to see a future with themselves as creative professionals and changemakers.
After the program, we offer some of the participants the opportunity to join our multi-year apprenticeship program. Through this, they get paid to work alongside professional photographers on commercial jobs gaining valuable
industry experience.
Through the 10-week program young people will learn and practice:
- How to use a camera and how a camera works (technical photography),
- How to create powerful imagery (visual thinking and critical thinking),
- How to convey an important message (strategic storytelling),
- How to engage communities, raise awareness and make social impact (campaigning, social innovation, design thinking, systems thinking),
- How to investigate, collaborate and have confidence in themselves (learn how to learn, problem solve together and believe in themselves).
Through the program each participant will work on an individual and a group project and produce:
- Their own online photography portfolio and blog,
- A curated individual photo series about something important to them, their community and society in general,
- An image as part of a group photo series that is collaboratively created and curated to have social impact.
We have run two successful Indigenous changemaking photography programs in the past in partnership with the Australian Centre for Photography, HeadOn Photo Festival, Arthere, Mobile Photo Group and Vibewire.
These programs guided the participants to produce some powerful imagery and we had three fantastic exhibitions, one was a part of the Head On Photo Festival. Three of the participants are now working in the Flashpoint Labs Photo
Agency as apprentices and together they have worked on more than 30 jobs for over 100 hours and made over $4,000.
We hope this program will lead to more apprentices joining the Flashpoint Labs agency and starting their career in the creative industries.
We are asking you to back young people from diverse backgrounds to make imagery and stories they can be proud of and gain skills that they will use throughout their lives.
$50 pays for one student to attend one out of the ten sessions.
$150 buys two young people a camera and SD card (cameras can be used in more than one program).
$250 pays for one student to attend half the course.
$500 pays for a young person to complete the course.
This campaign is being run in partnership with the amazing Avis Mulhall and Think Act Change.
