AVEH is...
The Art Village Education Hub (AVEH) is a community of women artisan producing handmade fashion through creative collaboration, social entrepreneurship and education to bring economic and social opportunities to their families and village.
The Problem
Due to the rise of tourism on the island of Bali traditional handicraft artisans continue to fall and skills lost. These techniques are not highly advertised nor used heavily outside of the domestic market, so the demand for such skills is relatively low.
As a result the younger generation of Balinese are taking employment in spas, hotels, and mini markets. The challenge is that at the artisan level there is limited understanding of the international markets that could support premium pricing. If utilized effectively
these handicraft skills can be revived and utilized as a vehicle for financial return, while having a positive social impact within the Balinese communities.
The Future We're Creating & How We're Doing It
The program trains day laborers in artisan skills to work in the village showroom to make high-end handmade fashion. The program sales from the showroom then funds English lessons for village girls in the education hub that allows them a greater chance to
access higher education and better job opportunities. The showroom space will be utilized to sell directly to foreign buyers internationally through virtual catalog ordering system and village property showroom. This approach allows for transparency for the
artisans and the buyers.
Who Is Stacy?
Stacy Stube is the Founder of AVEH. She was born on a remote island in Indonesia (Singar Taluad) and then moved to the inner city of Baltimore. Through hard work and persistence she was able to pursue high levels of education in Europe. While setting up
a socially-focused fashion company in Bali she couldn’t help but feel responsible to do something to give back. She decided to close the circle and return to the village and help girls to rise out of poverty through education. By empowering the girls, she
is determined to build up a village that can change a nation.
The photo immediately below on the left features Stacy as a little one growing up in Indonesia and the photo on the right is Stacy coming back 'home' to make a difference. The second photo listed under 'AVEH Art Village Education Hub - Team' features Stacy's
local team on the ground.
Our Story
The evolution of AVEH came to life when founder, Stacy Stube, was building her own fashion company in Bali, Indonesia. While conducting research and building her own socially focused fashion company, Stacy identified the challenges that
existed between the artisans making in Indonesia and fashion designers looking to source production in Bali. The free English began with Stacy teaching in June 2014, which has grown to a class of over 25 girls. Ni Luh Sudianti a Balinese Masters student has
taken over the classes as Social Impact Manager.
The program also has the Community Relationship Manager Gung Eva who is from the village and the original person to introduce Stacy to the village. The program in fact has been in part named after her EVA (AVEH). The village has been receptive to the program,
especially as many of the parents have not themselves had access to free English lessons. Some non-English speaking women in the village work as day laborers carrying rocks on their heads for a low wage. The Education Hub where the English lessons are held
utilizes the local bank at no cost to the organization.
The Art Village showroom is secured but funds are being raised to build a workshop where the women carrying rocks are trained to produce high-end fashion products to fund the English lessons for the village girls. The location will also act as a training
facility for the new recruits hired to produce the high-end fashion products thus creating more jobs locally. The training will be conducted by the Resident Artisan Putu who is from this village and highly skilled in the art of Balinese Lace Making. Stacy’s
fashion background and connections with the international fashion market will bridge the gap between the artisans and potential sales for future growth.
