Spur is a youth-led organisation dedicated to creating a lasting impact on the mental health and well-being of young Australian men.
Suicide is the number one cause of death amongst young people; and 80% of all suicide is men. Men are also less likely to: - rate mental health issues as a major health problem - mention depression as a major health problem - say they know what the major mental health problems in Australia were - identify most of the signs and symptoms of depression There is currently no existing program or services that targets young men on the issue of mental health. However, we know that suicide is preventable and young men does engage with brand that they feel comfortable engaging with and is targeted at them.
Our three objectives are: 1. Increase social connectedness and community involvement; 2. Increase mental health literacy and promote help-seeking; and 3. decrease stigma of mental health and all its associated issues
I'm Ehon, a changemaker who has passion for supporting young people who wants to change the world. I became passionate about mental health after the death of a best mate at age 16, and a long chat with a friend who was struggling with depression and anxiety prompted me to take some action on the issue. After much deliberation, research and discussion, Spur was borned. Currently we have myself co-ordinating the programs and campaigns, and Aleem Ali - Australia's leading social innovator and serial social entrepreneur, Kerry Graham - one of Australia's emerging leaders in social change, and Jeanette Miller - an online engagement expert, serving as the advising committee of the organisation. Together with a group of 30 young men from across the nation, a group of agencies and experts, we are putting together the strategy and rolling out our first social campaign in mid-July as part of the organisation's Phase 1.
