TAYEN’s vision is to have youth in Tanzania develop a positive attitude towards environmental conservation, so that the world we are living in can be a better place for both present and future generations. Our mission is to establish a network that will promote Children and Youth participation in environmental conservation initiatives based on actions for environmental conservation and natural resource management for sustainable development.
TAYEN works with young people in Tanzania to take action to address local and global environmental problems such as deforestation, climate change, water and sanitation. This will ensure we achieve environmental sustainability for all generations (current and future) and thus create a better future for all and conserve our PLANET EARTH.
There's a lack of environmental education programs for children and youth to learn about existing environmental and sustainable development problems and what role they can play in addressing them. Due to this most young people are ignorant and unaware of various community problems. This situation threatens sustainability of conservation and sustainable development efforts carried out by government, NGOs and the international community as well as the next future leaders and decision makers are uninformed, unskilled and lack knowledge.
TAYEN was also established to serve and stand as platform for children and youth in Tanzania to discuss, learn and address existing environmental problems in communities they live. TAYEN programs build capacity to young generation to address environmental and sustainable development problems.
In order to achieve above objectives TAYEN establishes Youth Environmental Clubs in primary, secondary and higher learning institutions in Tanzania. Formed Youth Environmental Clubs are led by students with close supervision of school management to ensure sustainability. Through established Youth Environmental Clubs, TAYEN conducts Environmental Education and Conservation Programs through trainings, workshops, seminars, campaigns, and program implementation in communities for youth to learn and address environmental problems affecting Tanzania and the rest of the world. Through TAYEN programs young people and the community learn and take action in tackling environmental problems affecting our planet today.

Growing up in the small town of Morogoro Eastern Tanzania I witnessed how poverty and energy problems are causing a lot of environmental damages to the nature. I grew up in Morogoro which is a small mountainous town that used to be covered with forests and trees, a town that used to receive a lot rainfall per year with temperature ranging between 19-23 degrees of centigrade; it is town that was once named “an agricultural hub of Tanzania”.
However due to a lack of alternative energy and poverty for many years, millions of trees in Morogoro have been cut down to serve rural and community household’s energy needs for wood and charcoal for cooking. As result of severe deforestation Morogoro now experiences increased temperature and less rainfall due to severe deforestation that has been mainly cause by lack of community environmental education and conservation programs.
In addressing this in 2006 while a student as University of Dar es Salaam I founded a youth led NGO known as Tanzania Youth Environmental Network (TAYEN). TAYEN’s approach is through establishing Youth Environmental Clubs in schools (primary, secondary and in Universities in Tanzania). Established Youth Environmental Clubs are led by volunteer students with close supervision of school management to ensure sustainability.
Through established Youth Environmental Clubs, TAYEN conducts Environmental Education and Conservation Programs through trainings, workshops, seminars, environmental campaigns in and outside school for youth to learn and address environmental problems affecting Tanzania and the globe.
