Think of Shouting Fire as a virtual burn barrel to gather around, an audio salon where you can hear and share stories that the world needs right now.
Amidst all the changes in communications technology, the reality is that voices--political, commercial, and creative--still tell the tales that code the culture. Stories and myth still shape society; it's just a question of who's in charge of the myth-making apparatus of modern media--and what their motivations are. Shouting Fire is an attempt to reclaim some Grand Narrative ground from the preponderance of profiteers and fear mongers.
Some might call it an online radio station, but we think of Shouting Fire as an audio commons, a digital campfire where you can share stories, trade inspiration, and marshal resources. Something between a broadcast and a podcast, it's a nexus for ideas and engagement, an online salon where you will be able to listen to an eclectic mix of programming or access the content you want on demand: from gorgeous grooves and live broadcasts to insightful interviews and calls to action. Things you won't hear anywhere else but which should be heard everywhere else. But most important: this is a conversation, not a monologue. Because Shouting Fire is potentially you. What you have to offer is what we want to push out to the world. Philosophy, poetry, and politics. Art, activism, and enlightenment. The intentional noise that engages and inspires you and your community. The Internet might be the Great Democratizer, but it takes community and resources to elevate our signal above the noise. If we network ourselves appropriately and collectivize our efforts, we can give that signal the boost it needs.Together, we can all speak more loudly than any one of us could alone. In a world where image is king, where the icons of the age are corporate logos and celebrities rather than cultural warriors and agents of transformation, the power of sharing our stories and telling our tales is more important than ever. New stories need to be told, and new voices need to be heard. We hope you'll join us, not only through a contribution--but also by bringing your own noise to our creative cabal.
Our work producing Burning Man Information Radio for the past ten years has demonstrated that if a platform for the community is built, the community will come out to play--with the most serious of intentions, and with the levels of ingenuity we've come to expect from each other. Shouting Fire is an evolving project to bring this aural opportunity to the other 358 days of the year: to share how we are taking the ethos and energy of Black Rock City out of the desert and integrating them into our daily lives. We've been running off and on in beta mode for some time now, testing out programming while conspiring on even more, sending out our own brand of cultural (r)evolution with a backbeat. But the financial realities of streaming and licensing fees and equipment upgrades have become an impasse. Which is why we're asking YOU to join our efforts.
