Open Education Institute mission is to empower parents to take control of their family's educational needs by leveraging the power of the Internet.
Math. Algebra. Chemistry. Every year millions of students struggle academically because of the lack of high-quality resources in their school and at home. Budget cuts have lead many schools to reduce tutoring services and private tutoring services can be extremely expensive and inconvenient.
However, the Internet offers a wide variety of high-quality open educational resources including websites such as Khan Academy, studyHelp, FlexMath, Teacher Tube and CK12 FlexBooks. These self-pace learning resources are free, available 24/7 and accessible on-demand. All the resources a struggling student needs to catch-up and excel in school.
The problem, most parents know nothing about these learning resources and continue to spend time and money on other traditional and costly education services and tutoring.
The Open Education Institute aims to help parents save time and money on academic assistance for their children by introducing them to Open Educational Resources (OER) that are "freely available" on the Internet. Our purpose is to "bring the digital classroom into the home" by providing parents with the knowledge, skill and access to successfully use digital learning resources to help their children succeed in school and 21st century life.
Imagine your child having a problem with homework, and asks for your help with "Solving Quadratic Equations by Completing a Square" algebra problem. Parents who attended our seminar will easily find the necessary information to help guide the child to solve the problem. We want to change the "homework" dialog between parent and child by empowering parents with the confidence and tools to assist their children with any schoolwork problem.
Our innovative seminar will change how "at-home" tutoring is obtained in the 21st century, which will significantly impact struggling students and communities across the world. The Internet, digital learning and Open Educational Resources can eliminate cost and time barriers for families to obtain a quality education in the comfort of their home.
This is the education future we wish to create!
My partner and I have 20 + years experience in the education industry, from the days when we first introduced Laser Disc's in the classroom, to now implementing and training teachers on how to use 21st century Internet teaching & learning tools in schools globally. We've trained thousands of teachers over the years.
We simply want to provide this same digital learning training to empower parents to help their children at home.
Our plan is to conduct "hands-on" seminars with our expert team of experienced teachers who will introduce and guide parents on how to use Internet-based digital learning tools and resources with their chlidren in the comfort of their home. The 3-hour seminar will be held on Saturdays and Sundays at community venues.
Parents who attend the seminar will recieve computer-based access to a library of over 10,000 Open Education Resources via our family-friendly learning resource LrPortal.
In the future, we plan to offer an Internet-based newsletter / magazine with real-time information on digital learning trends, innovations and home-based learning techniques for parents.

Open Education Institute plans to launch ten pilot seminars in the Seattle / Tacoma area in November 2012 and will expand to other West coast communities in 2013/14/15. In 2016 we aim to offer seminars globally.
We need start-up funds to launch, conduct and promote pilot seminars including meeting room rental, including broadband connectivity for up to 100 devices; seminar leaders and student helpers expenses; event marketing and promotional activities and workshop supplies.
Our goal is to impact 100,000 + families annually by 2016.
The Internet has revolutionized education attainment for anyone who wishes to learn. There is a substantial amount of open educational resources from pre-school to college courses freely available on the Interent. We want to expand the use of 21st century learning tools by increasing awareness among families, starting with parents. Too many people are unaware these education resources are available to them.
We aim to impact parents to begin using 21st century digital learning tools at home, as an "affordable" education resource for their families. We have the team of teacher presenters and technology resources to deliver impactful and engaging "awareness" seminars in communities globally.
We need your help in launching and supporting this innovative education initiative.
Why should someone support our education initiative? It has the potential to improve the lives of a student, family member and/or friend that anyone who supports us may know. Having a quality education is critical for success in the digital-age. An education in the 21st century does not have to be costly to obtain.
Our seminar framework can be scaled to impact thousands of families in communities globally.
