Uncovering the truth about how Aussies' taxes encourage polluting fossil fuels & how we can stop this wasteful spending
Market Forces is working with other Australian NGOs and grassroots groups to have fossil fuel subsidies phased out and that money put into programs that build a stronger, more sustainable Australia.
They say "knowledge is power". It's also fundamental to being able to campaign successfully. But governments keep a lot of critical information about fossil fuel subsidies hidden from view.
We already have some understanding about how some of these absurd subsidies work. For instance, we taxpayers are funding a fuel discount to the mining industry worth about $2 billion per year. Imagine the sort of positive programs we could fund with that money instead.
But there's still a lot more to find out. That's why we're using Freedom of Information laws to uncover the truth about which companies are receiving fossil fuel subsidies, how we can effectively phase them out, and how the environment will benefit if our taxes are no longer given out to encourage these polluting fuels.
Once we reach $700 we can put a deposit down on the information and the government has 30 days to start releasing it to us.
When we get the info we'll package it up and release it to the world through the media, social media and directly to supporters of the campaign, and use it to pressure the government to cancel this wasteful spending.
We've got some great opportunities this year to force the government to cancel fossil fuel subisides, from the budget in May through to the G20 meeting and election in September. This information will be able to back up our calls and those of other groups working to have fossil fuel subsidies redirected to positive programs.
And if we exceed our goal you can be sure we'll reinvest that money back into this campaign, funding more research and campaigning for fossil fuel subsidy reform.
