Provide 5 orphanage homes in Kenya with materials and resources needed to raise their own chickens, so children have access to healthy protein in the form of eggs
Due to the current famine in the northeastern region of Africa, food prices have tripled in many areas, including the country of Kenya. Many of our partner orphanages have kept us updated on the rising costs and the burden this has placed on them when providing food for their children. As a solution, we proposed a sustainable method of food access- grow and care for their own chickens. Aside from being packed with essential vitamins and minerals, eggs have the highest quality protein found in any food- perfect for growing kids! The chicken coop will provide a fun, educational activity for the kids, teaching them responsibiliy as they see the chickens grow, while providing relief to the caretakers in the form of healthy food access, and saving money spent in the overpriced market
Funding will be used to purchase chicks, roosters, coops, feed, and to hire a project coordinator in Kenya to oversee the five homes and their progress. The breakdown is as follows:
Tipping Point Goal
Coop (materials,labor, sawdust) $102
1 Rooster $1
12 Hens $3
Medicine and Food (antibiotics, feed) $37
Vet visit (monthly) $7
Total budget for start up and supplies for 5 months $375 per home
5 homes participating $1875
Cost of project coordinator: $200 per month, 5 month contract $1000
Total for Tipping Point: $2875
Total Goal:$4500
Reaching the total goal would allow Kitechild staff a visit to Kenya to review and record success of project in order to implement in other areas.
