This campaign will help fund the purchase by 2000 schools of the acclaimed ABC film On a Wing and a Prayer as an education tool, with downloadable study guide.
Our unique Australian black cockatoo is having a tough time surviving.
Loss of habitat, food shortages, feral animals and drought are just a few of the threats that have brought these iconic Australian birds to the brink of extinction.
Kaarakin: The Australian Threatened Species Centre in Western Australia is helping save our beloved “larrikin of the bush”. They rescue, rehabilitate and release birds back to the bush. They also retain those birds (both red tails and white tails) which cannot be put back into the wild, as part of the breeding stock for their Breed for Release program and there have already been some remarkable success stories.

"On a Wing and a Prayer' is a remarkable film that follows the journey of a Carnaby’s (white tailed) Cockatoo family from its struggle for daily survival to the joyful arrival of their chicks.
PROJECT LAUNCH
Our project is to first fund the purchase this inspiring and educational DVD from the Australian ABC, who have set a minimum purchase price of $22,729.85 for 2,000 DVDs. We've already raised a portion of this minimum offline, and are now looking at our StartSomeGood campaign to reach this goal.
All funding donations, which are fully tax deductible in Australia, are paid to the Black Cockatoo Preservation Society.
OUR SCHOOL CAMPAIGN
Then, beginning in mid August 2012, schools and/or P&C Associations throughout Australia will be invited to purchase the DVD through a dedicated website link, promoted in print and online.
P&C Associations and parents who buy the DVD for their school library, complete with a downloadable study guide, will pay directly into the Black Cockatoo Preservation Society account. The DVD will be shipped by mail to either the school or the purchaser, once the purchase price of $23.00 (including P&H) has been received.
OUR PROJECT VIDEO
Our project video about the Nannup Centre will give you an extensive view of the work being done in rescue and breeding at Nannup. The film shows David and Dee Patterson with their extensive flock of rescued and captive bred black cockatoos and we have visited their Nannup sanctuary several times to see their continuing work. The “Jamarri Black Cockatoo Rehabilitation Centre” in Nannup will receive 15% of the net sales proceeds raised through this campaign to assist them with their costs of feeding and caring for their birds, (in cash and in kind).
Even after release, the Cockatoos will return for some time for supplementary feeding and David has uploaded a couple of videos to YouTube in the past – showing released birds feeding outside the cages. Because the parents care for their young for up to eighteen months in the wild, it should be no surprise that they continue to return to their sanctuary.
Education is the key to the survival of our Black Cockatoos – of our children, their parents and those who hold their future habitat in their hands. Please support this campaign to share "On A Wing And A Prayer" and save the Black Cockatoo
The proceeds from this campaign will go directly to Black Cockatoo Preservation Society to help fund the purchase of the DVDs from the ABC and to subsequently support the work of Black Cockatoo Rescue and Rehabilitation.
With a comprehensive marketing programme to 5,000 schools, the DVD’s will be acquired by Schools through parents and P&C Assoc. This creates a substantial funding value for and will help raise community awareness of the work of Black Cockatoo Preservation Society. The DVD's will be sold for $23.00 each (including P&H)
None of the funds will be used to promote the campaign to 5,000 schools (which has already been funded privately by Our Online Canteen and Stories My Nana Tells)
The Black Cockatoo Preservation Society (which is a registered Australian Charity) will purchase the DVD’s from the ABC and accept the costs of payments through StartSomeGood, PayPal and credit cards. Rewards for donors will be funded from the project.
