Plastic has been an integral part of our daily life for its easy nature. But the harm it has brought to the nature and environment especially in a country like Nepal is very worrisome. The solution could simply be the use of jeans/jute bag or alternative bag while going for shopping helps to prevent the rivers from being choked and the land being turned up into a plastic pile.
Even in the only metropolitan city, Kathmandu, which is also the capital city, there is not any provision of the proper waste management. The liquid or solid wastes are ruthlessly dumped into the rivers by the people in absence of efficient and regular pick up of the wastes by the government. There is no proper waste sorting facility done. All the waste including the organic as well as inorganic wastes are collected in the same vessel from each households. Even the educated people do not sort different sorts of wastes in absence of any recycling plants. The government has made a provision to collect aggregate waste from the metropolitan (Which is frequently obstructed by many groups, which causes the whole city to remain stinky and filthy sometimes for weeks or even months.) and dump in some specified dumping sites, which are not far from the human settlement. Because of this, the agricultural lands have being misused. Due to the unreliability of the collection, people tend to throw away garbages into the streets in open daylight even in the city area. The percentage of the wastes dispersed in the city area(nowadays even in rural areas) shows that more than 50 percent waste are polythene bags. The problem it creates is not only the streets but also the rivers and the streams are all choked of plastics.
First we will distribute the denim bag at a very subsidized price, so there is accountability. We will distribute the bags only after we orient citizens why this campaign will benefit them: what is the necessity behind this project and so on. We will orient the local leaders, school principals and teachers to do this, then in second round, we will also go to the other markets.
I am Udit Bhatta, a youth of 25 yrs of age. I am the vice principal of Nepal's first green and eco-friendly school(It's because we are using eco-friendly sustainable solar cooking technology in the school which cooks food for nearly 300 people with the solar energy, bio-gas generation in the school premises itself through the organic wastes of school, human toilet drainage etc. Rain water harvesting system and integration of environment education as a specially designed course for the students of this school.) We also have a herbal garden which has nearly 50 important medicinal plants found in Nepal and this has been managed in participation with the students of this school. We became the winner in a herbal garden competition organized recently by ICIMOD.(www.icimod.org). This is an extra feather to the eco-friendly concept of the school. This is all about my work. Regarding my studies, i am an plant ecologist. (I am a student of master's level, final year in Tribhuvan University, Nepal). Hence i am aware of the nature and its benefit to mankind, this is the major source of inspiration to me.
