We believe that all students deserve good education, but not all children have the same opportunity. In Thailand, there are more than 2 million students, 100,000 classrooms and 10,000 schools have limited access to educational resources. With lack of educational resources make it more difficult for teachers to teach, and so can result in slow academic progress of these students. Deejai is a non-profit social enterprise in Thailand that aims to provide opportunities to these students in needs, by using matching donors to teachers' projects that help to improve access to education resources.
We want to create better future for Thai students. All students in Thailand, regardless of where they go to schools, deserve good education, and especially those living in the rural regions of Thailand, they need to be educated so they can break through the cycle of poverty. Currently, there are more than 10,000 schools that face limited budget, resulting in their inabilities to purchase education materials needed for classrooms.
If we compare two students at grade 1 - one goes to a school in a city and one goes to a shool in a remote province, at the same age the city student can read and write a sentence at the age of 5 whereas the other can only read and write a simple word. There is a big gap in academic performance of these two students. One problem could be from the lack of access to suitable learning materials. Deejai believes that having increase access to education resources could help to improve their academic performance, and could make it a lot eaiser for teachers to communicate in classes.
Deejai connects donors to students/schols in needs. Teachers in these shcools know best about what their students lack, so we work closely with teachers on our project recruitment process. Teachers send us their project proporsals - what they need to create better learning environment or to improve academic performance of their students. Deejai did some screening - we go to visit these schools to see what they ask for are really needed. Also, we look at impacts that projects can have to students.
Once projects are selected, we put them up on our online channels ,which currently are facebook fanpage and youtube channel to reach our donors. When we first started, we set booth at community malls in Bangkok to raise money for these projects. Donors can visit our online channels, and make donations. When the target amout of a project is reached, Deejai will then deliver materials for the teacher and students.
Deejai is found by three MBA students from Thammasat Business School, Thailand. Starting with the thought of wanting to run a non-profit venture, which aims to help Thai students have better education. After we went travelling together, we saw that many kids in rural regions have limited access to educational supplies, and we found that many teachers also faced problems with annual limited budget so they could not purchase enough resources for students.
Three of us are very fortunate, and we believe that you are also very fortunate as we went to good schools and received good education. But, many children we met have never been on a field trip or had their own textbooks. Some are very talented in drawing/painting, but their parents cannot afford buying art supplies. Some kindergarten children at age 5 cannot even write some simple words.
We want these kids to have better opportunities. Those who love to draw or paint have enough color pens and paper, so they can create great art pieces. Those who love to play sports can enjoy safe sport equipments, so they have less injuries.
