Campaign Overview

A travelling exhibition on corrective rape in Cape Town.

Our project resolves to create an exhibition that will highlight corrective rape in South Africa. Rape is endemic in South Africa. One gruesome statistic – every 26 seconds another rape occurs. Corrective rape is uniquely contemptible because of the overriding motivation behind it. It attempts to change someone's sexual preference by extreme force.

Mafuane and Thandiwe are two lesbian women from Cape Town anxious to share their stories and lives with an international audience.

Our exhbition will feature photography, field recordings, documents, film and text. Elements to bring our audience as close as possible to the lives of Mafuane and Thandiwe.

The exhibition will travel from Cape Town to Dublin to Berlin and Sao Paulo initially and then we plan to extend it to more countries. Our nomadic exhibition will sensitise people to this abuse and apply pressure on South African law makers to have corrective rape reclassified as a hate crime.

Your help will get it started.

Tipping Point Goal: $2,000

Total Funding Goal: $5,000

We have selected $2000 as our tipping point. At this point we can still put a shrunken version of our exhibition together by reducing our print run, the quality of our materials and the size of the show.

$5,000 will enable us to put together the full exhibition. The costs break down as follows:

1800 - material

1000 - publishing

1200 - printing

1000 - transport

We were awarded some initial funding by the Simon Cumbers Media Fund to write two magazine articles on corrective rape. With this money we will cover our flights and some of our operational costs in South Africa. Getting closer to our project, we felt that it deserved a louder voice. That`s when we had the idea to spend more time with Mafuane and Thandiwe and create the exhibition. For this we`ll need your help.

Thank you very much.
