Australia is a first-world nation but 80% of young people in remote and rural indigenous communities cannot read. We continue to help 3rd world countries in need but not our own neighbours. Bus Of Books want to change that.
Founded by a group of young entrepreneurs, Bus of Books is dedicated to providing young people in rural and remote indigenous communities with resources and programs to read, succeed and make a difference.
Our vision is to inspire young lives one book at a time, by putting books into the hands of young people and empowering them to experience the joy of reading. Our goal by 2015 is to collect 100,000 books and raise $100,000 for 50 schools and communities.
Our programs and campaigns engages schools, universities, local communities, organisations, and businesses in community service through book collection drives and fundraising events. These resources are collected in a bus and driven to a community in need and presented to them.
Australia is a first world nation but we are faced with these shocking statistics:
1. 80% of young people in remote and rural indigenous communities cannot read. That is 160,000 young people
2. 75% of school dropouts report reading problems
3. 50% of young people living in poverty or unemployed
have difficulty reading
“Literacy unlocks the door to learning throughout life, is essential to development and health, and opens the way for democratic participation and active citizenship.”
- Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General
